Great Cookbook Collections across the U.S.: Iowa’s 19th-20th Century Recipe Pamphlets

We hope that the recipes we post on La Cocina Historica will inspire our readers to visit the collection in person here at the University of Texas in San Antonio. However, for those of you who live a little (or a lot) further away, we’ll also post occasional links to some of other great cookbook collections around the country and the world.

Today, I’d like to invite you to check out the University of Iowa’s Szathmary Recipe Pamphlet Collection. This collection of over 4,000 promotional recipe pamphlets includes publications released by food and appliance manufacturers from the late 19th century to the present. The documentation of the early 20th century is particularly interesting, as it covers the period during which industrialization of food processing transformed American foodways. A selection of pamphlets may be viewed here. Enjoy!
